On April 14, the volcano with the unpronounceable name Eyjafjallajökull, erupted. The high altitude winds push the ash and other dusts from Iceland to Western Europe ...

... Provoking an unprecedented total paralysis of the air transport system.

Initially, medias announced this volcanic eruption at the end of the 8 o’clock TV news, just before the weather and the ad ...

But Thursday, April 15, just 24 hours after the onset of the eruption, the northern european countries have decided to close their airspace because of the approximation of the ash cloud, driven by strong current elevation, "jets".

Very quickly, other countries, including France have closed some of their airports. CDG, Orly, London and many others have been closed, causing chaos in air travel. Never seen since the beginning of air transport.

This decision was taken following advisories from the Volcano Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in London. The network of 9 VAAC (see map above) monitors volcanic ash clouds and determines their path according to the wind. This network is a member of the International Airways Volcano Watch of the ICAO, which produces the NOTAMS and SIGMET warning crews and air operators of present and forecasted hazards.

Going through these messages, we realize the importance of the danger. Reading the adventure of flight BA009, June 24, 1982 confirms us in this need to stay on the ground.

My friend Kokopelli is in Iceland. Maybe it will
go back home by boat!

Particule volcanique (Mt St Helen, USA).
